Methoni Castle

The Methoni castle was built in the 13th century and is one of the largest in the Mediterranean. There is also a little islet called the Bourtzi that was built in the 1500's and is connected to the castle by a tiny paved road; it was used as a prison and place of executions during the Turkish Occupation. We got to the site with only 30-45 minutes or something like that before it closed, so we ran around like crazy trying to get pictures. It was also very windy. Warning: There are 45 pictures of this castle. I didn't narrow it down well.

  1. Wow, awesome photos! It appears that the castle is partially restored, like some of the arches, walkways, and edges. What kind of rock do you see being used in the area? Also, I am wondering if Greece gets many earthquakes...

  2. Yes, there are earthquakes. I could not identify the rock for you. There was most likely restoration in spots that could collapse. This was also built only a couple hundred years ago as opposed to thousands.
