Kerameikos

Today, Bob took me to the Kerameikos in Athens. This site is where some of the gates to the ancient city are located. Then beyond the ancient city walls was a cemetery. Also located here is a museum with some of the finds from the area as well as the grave monuments that were recovered.

From inside the museum:
Sphinx

A gaming table and die with mourners as decor.

A grave monument.

A lion that was located at the sacred gate.

Mourners on a bowl. I told Bob I was curious as to why so many items had mourners on them before I remembered that half the site is the ancient cemetery.

Views of the site:

From the cemetery section of the site, here are reconstructions of what the graves would have looked like.

These vivid flowers were all over.

A gate of the ancient city.

This propylon was the way the processional to the Acropolis took.

A turtle hanging out here too.

One of the gates.

A house.

  1. Very interesting! Looks like a huge site. I think the flowers might be poppies.
